The travellers guide to: cardiovascular disease
By Phil Day, Superintendent Pharmacist – Pharmacy2U
In the UK, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death and disability. It’s a very serious health condition which requires extra consideration for those looking to travel.
Here I’m going to take an in-depth look at what exactly cardiovascular disease is, including its symptoms, treatments, and the special considerations for those who are booking a trip.
Cardiovascular disease, also known as heart and circulatory disease, is a general name given to conditions which affect the circulation and the heart. It may also be linked to damaged arteries in organs such as the eyes, brain, heart and kidneys.
If you think you’re experiencing any of the symptoms relating to these conditions, contact your GP to discuss them further. If you believe you’re having a medical emergency, call 999 immediately.
Although the specific causes of cardiovascular disease aren’t clear, there are risk factors which are known to increase your chances of getting it.
Cardiovascular disease risk factors include:
The good news is that in most cases, the risk of cardiovascular disease can be significantly reduced by adopting a healthier lifestyle.
You can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by making changes to your lifestyle. And if you have already been diagnosed, living healthier can prevent it worsening.
To minimise the risk of cardiovascular disease you should:
If there’s a high risk that you’ll develop cardiovascular disease, a GP may prescribe medication to help reduce this risk.
Common medicines to do this include statins, which work by reducing the levels of harmful cholesterol in your blood. Low doses of aspirin are used to thin the blood and can help prevent heart attacks and strokes. Medicines to lower blood pressure are also commonly prescribed and there are many types of these which work in different ways.
If you’ve recently been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, then taking a holiday can be a great way to rest and relax. However, it’s worth noting that there are some special considerations for those with cardiovascular disease who are looking to travel.
Most people with cardiovascular disease should be fine to travel if their condition is stable and they’re feeling well; however, I’d recommend contacting your GP to discuss any concerns you may have.
When booking a holiday, try to make it as relaxing as possible. Don’t book anywhere that’s too strenuous to get to, and don’t pack your days with activities.
Preparation is very important when travelling: when planning, make sure your travel insurance explicitly covers cardiovascular disease, make a note of the relevant emergency contact numbers, and get any medicines you need in advance.
If you’ve been prescribed medicines for cardiovascular disease, you’re likely to be taking them on a long term basis. Pharmacy2U can help you get your medications conveniently and safely, by delivering your repeat NHS prescriptions directly to your door, for free.
