Cruise

Thinking of embarking on a solo cruise? It’s an experience unlike any other, a blend of self-discovery and adventure. But here’s a tip: the timing can make all the difference and can elevate it from memorable to exceptional. While you’re planning your holiday, don’t forget the safety net beneath – Cruise Travel Insurance.

Getting the Best Out of the Weather

One of the perks of solo cruising is the flexibility. You can sail when it suits you best. Here are some suggestions of where to go:

  • Mediterranean: While summer promises sun-soaked days, spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are less crowded. You can enjoy pleasant temperatures without the tourist hustle. Plus, off-peak often means reduced rates.
  • Caribbean: The best times are usually between December and April, avoiding hurricane season. However, the shoulder months, like May and early June or November, offer fewer crowds and slightly cooler temperatures.
  • Alaska: If glaciers and wildlife are on your list, consider cruising between June and August. However, May and September, while cooler, are less crowded and can often be cheaper.

Experiencing the Culture

Solo cruising offers a golden opportunity to immerse yourself in the world’s diverse cultures. Here are some times of year to consider:

  • Rio Carnival, Brazil (February/March): Experience the world’s most famous carnival. Attend samba parades and street parties, and immerse yourself in the pulsating rhythms of Brazil.

Tip: Book an organised tour to ensure you see the highlights and stay safe.

  • Venice Carnival, Italy (February): Step back in time with masquerade balls, grand feasts, and the romantic backdrop of Venice’s canals.

Tip: Attend one of the traditional mask-making workshops.

  • Cherry Blossom Season, Japan (March/April): If you’re considering an Asian cruise, timing it with the cherry blossom season in Japan is magical. The bloom period varies by location, but typically, late March to early April sees Tokyo and Kyoto in full bloom.

While diving deep into these cultural experiences, it’s important to remember accidents, illness and injuries can happen anywhere, so you’ll want to ensure you have the safety net of Cruise Travel Insurance.

Planning a Solo Cruise FAQs

Frequently asked questions for those considering where to go on a solo cruise.

How does the duration of my trip affect my insurance?

The duration of your trip can impact the price you pay for insurance, but it is only one factor. Some insurers will have caps on the amount of days they will provide cover for at anyone time, e.g. 100 days. Typically, the longer your cruise, the higher the premium due to increased risks associated with extended travel, such as potential illness or trip interruptions. We will do our best to find a policy that meets your unique needs, and if we cannot help you, we will help find you someone who can.

How early should I get Travel Insurance before my cruise?

We recommend that you get Travel Insurance soon after booking your cruise. This ensures you benefit from cancellation cover, protecting you against unforeseen events that might force you to cancel. Get a quote through Just Travel Cover up to 18 months before your cruise.

Do I need to specify that I'm going on a cruise when getting an insurance quote?

Yes, make sure you answer ‘yes’ to the cruise question when getting a quote. This means you’ll be covered while cruising, and also means we can show you the policies that carry the additional benefits. You may even be denied boarding if you do not have appropriate Travel Insurance in place.

Is going on a solo cruise safe for senior travellers?

Absolutely! Modern cruise ships are equipped with a range of safety and medical facilities. However, senior travellers with pre-existing medical conditions must ensure they have Travel Insurance that covers their declared conditions. If you are concerned, it’s also a good idea to consult with a doctor before the trip to ensure you’re fit for travel.

Is it cheaper to cruise solo?

Not necessarily. While solo cruising means only one person’s expenses, cruise lines often charge a “single supplement” fee for solo travellers since cabins are typically priced for double occupancy. This fee covers the lost revenue from having just one person in a room that can accommodate two. However, some cruise lines offer solo cabins or occasionally run promotions for solo travellers, which can make cruising solo more affordable.
